Introduction

After just two days of voting, the Cardinals of the Catholic Church have elected the 266th successor of Saint Peter. Just before 6.20pm on Thursday 8 May, the announcement was made from the loggia of St Peter’s to the thousands of people waiting in the square below and the world’s media. Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as pope and will take the name Pope Leo XIV.
